Continental Airlines mobile ads more effective than online

Quattro client Continental Airlines found that mobile ads were five-to-ten times more effective than online at generating responses from Hispanics, a demographic that tends to be heavy users of wireless devices.

 

 

Verizon And Motorola Roll Out The Droid

At a news conference in New York Wednesday, Verizon Wireless introduced its latest attempt to blunt Apple’s iPhone, the Motorola Droid. And it promised the largest advertising campaign in its history to tout the phone’s advantages.

 

Analyst: Nokia planning Maemo iPhone competitor

Nokia plans to release a mass-market, Linux-based Maemo smartphone to compete with Apple's iPhone in the second half of 2010, according to UBS analyst Maynard Um. Although the move appears to signal an increasing reliance by Nokia on Maemo at the expense of Symbian, a Nokia spokesman said the company still considers the Symbian platform its main smartphone operating system.

 

Apple Promises To Defend Itself "Vigorously" Against Nokia Suit

Apple hasn’t given much away since news surfaced last week that mobile phone giant Nokia had filed suit in the United States alleging that the firm had infringed 10 of its patents to build the iPhone. According to Reuters, which combed though its 10-K annual report filed Tuesday, Apple has vowed to “defend the case vigorously.” The 10-K also showed that Nokia’s suit isn’t the only infringement case Apple is up against—in total its defending more than 47 patent suits, of which over half were filed in fiscal 2009. Apple acknowledged that in some of those cases it might actually have to consider the “desirability of entering into licensing agreements.”

 

Disney iPhone App Mixes Magic with Advertising

Disney’s new iPhone app, launched today, rewards users for checking out Disney.com. The company plans to eventually offer exclusive bonuses for shopping at Disney Stores. The necessary mobile push for Disney comes along with the company’s move to catch up with the times, with Apple’s Steve Jobs leading their in-store experience redesign efforts.

 

Google released second version of Android mobile software tools

Google said today it is releasing its newest software tools for its Android operating system for smartphones in advance of Motorola’s launch of its Droid cell phone for Verizon Wireless.

The code-named Eclair version of Android has a number of improvements, such as support for multiple fingers controlling a touchscreen on a smart phone. Phones that use Android 2.0 will let users sync multiple e-mail accounts and contact address books. Users will also be able to call someone by tapping a photo in a contact list.

 

CHART OF THE DAY: iPhone Is Closing In On BlackBerry, Fast

Apple's iPhone 3GS is driving its market share higher and higher, according to a new study from ChangeWave Research.

The firm surveyed 4,255 consumers in September, and found 39% of them now have a smartphone, which is up from 37% from July and almost double from a year ago.
